The Flower of Shembe is a large multi-dimensional production which addresses the South African history and culture, religion and human strengths and frailties. The operetta Flower of Shembe has toured for about 24 months in various parts of South Africa, Europe, Latin America and New York.
Pure Felt Africa and the team of felters created the felt props (wings) & felt costumes for majority of operetta cast. The felted stage curtains could not be used due to a last-minute change of venue to the much larger ArtScape Center.
“Youngblood with great success collaborated with Pure Felt in a number of felt art projects: until to-date the Flower of Shembe and a CSI project of Zenprop. These projects form an integral and important part of Youngblood`s skills development arm in South Africa and through these projects and the exciting medium of felt we are able to empower young previously unemployed individuals from disadvantaged areas. “

“I was delighted by our collaboration with the Pure Felt Africa Team who -jointly with our production designer Craig Leo- designed the felted wings for one of the highlight moments during our Flower of Shembe operetta performance and created the majority of the costumes of our cast. The felt creations contributed in a substantial manner to emphasize the mythical atmosphere of our performance; the felt works were incredibly well received by all stakeholders and praised by the audience. Knowing that the creation of the felt works supported unemployed youth made the outcome even more special. It was truly a win-win for everyone involved and I would definitely do this again.”
